Stealthdrive UK are proud to announce the official UK launch of their innovative electric kayak propulsion system, the SD-30.

  • Kayak fishing, including fully programmable Trolling
  • Watching/filming birds and wildlife -- whisper-quiet operation
  • Recreational fun -- zoom around effortlessly
  • Group safety/rescue boat -- tows second kayak at up to 6km/hr
  • Ideal for disabled people -- designed by a disabled engineer with disabled users in mind
  • Assistance for a slower paddler or in adverse conditions
  • Motorised kayak as dive support boat
  • Fleet boat-hire and Tourism -- easy to use and with full safety features
  • ... and many more applications.

The SD-30 is the result of a unique collaboration between New Zealand kayak experts and British world-leading electronics know-how. The result is a propulsion system with unequalled performance, safety, reliability and quietness.

Of course, adding an electric motor to a kayak for trolling has been done before. But such additions are inefficient and potentially very unsafe -- imagine what would happen if you fell out and were hit by the propeller, or the boat sailed off without you!

That's where the SD-30 comes in, as a fully-integrated and properly-engineered electric propulsion system, with safety and reliability paramount in the design, and excellent performance.

The Stealthdrive SD-30 features a powerful motor that is capable of driving a heavily loaded sea kayak at over 7 km/hr (and even faster for smaller or lighter craft), backed up by state-of-the-art safety and control systems. The motor cuts out automatically if the kayak is rolled more than ninety degrees, if the user falls out, if the motor is overloaded or shorted, if the SD-30's dual self-checking microprocessors detect a system fault, or if the handset is disconnected. This makes accidents practically impossible!

The SD-30 system consists of the following parts:

  1. A motor/propeller/rudder assembly that simply replaces the existing rudder blade on many designs of kayak. For use with rudderless craft, add-on rudder kits are available from third-party suppliers and Stealthdrive UK are actively developing a range of versatile mounts to attach the motor assembly to other kayak designs.

  2. A small handset with daylight-visible LED display and tactile buttons, which may be attached to the kayak or held in the hand. The handset is fully waterproof and will float if dropped overboard, from where it can be retrieved by means of its cable.

  3. A fully-waterproof 'main unit' which contains the control electronics. This connects to the battery, motor and handset and may be located anywhere convenient in the hull, usually adjacent to the battery. The handset can be unplugged from the main unit.

  4. A 12-volt rechargeable battery, normally a sealed lead-acid ('AGM' or 'GEL') type. Suitable batteries and charger may be obtained directly from Stealthdrive UK or from many other sources. The capacity of the battery chosen depends on your requirements for range and endurance.
